Making and drinking green smoothies in the summer when the weather gets really hot is not only refreshing but a great healthy choice for either a snack or a meal. Based on the ingredients and special additions such as chia or ground flax seeds you use, you can really transform a cup of cold beverage to a balanced and delicious, healthy meal.
We all know that and love our smoothies, but what about the green ones?! Green smoothies have become pretty popular in the last couple of years, yet if you haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, it might seem a little strange at first. Why is it green? Will it taste weird, like a salad? Why is it any better than my favorite fruit smoothie?
Well, today we are here to tell you a little bit more about green smoothies, why they are good, how to create your own.
When thinking about why these beverages are good for you, firstly just think about what makes them green? Vegetables! We all know that we should be consuming a certain amount of vegetables each day, but a lot of people still struggle to be consistent with their veggie intake on a daily basis. A green smoothie is a great way to get your vegetables in, without having to worry about the preparation as they are super easy to make. Not to mention that it is a super way to get your kids eat –or in our case, drink- their vegetables if they are picky otherwise: there is a high chance they won’t say no to a cold, refreshing sweet drink in the heat!
Furthermore, green smoothies are the best nutritious vitamin bombs you can have! Yes, smoothies made of only fruit also contain vitamins and fibers, but adding green veggies takes it to a whole other level! Even though green smoothies are relatively low calorie –so can be fit even into stricter diet plans- they provide you with a long lasting energy boost due to the natural sugars from the fruits and fill you up for longer thanks to the fibers from the vegetables in them.
And last but not least, green smoothies can help a lot with your hydration in the summer, when you need it the most, especially if you feel bored of drinking just water all day long.
Now that we know why they are so good for us, let’s look at how to create our own in just a few simple steps.
- Choose a liquid base! It is as easy at it seems, just choose a liquid for the smoothie. The basic choice is as always ice cold water, but adding a little bit of orange juice can be a good idea too. If you want it to be a bit heavier and creamy, you can use milk or non-dairy plant based milk too – and some people like to use coconut water or even green tea.
- Choose your greens! It is mostly darker, leafy greens that are recommended for these smoothies: the most popular choice is spinach and kale, but romaine or lettuce might work too. It’s not leafy, but cucumber might be a great addition too.
- Choose your fruit! The reason why green smoothies actually taste delicious and sweet is the fruit in them. Banana is the best choice to make it creamy and sweet, but you can go for orange, kiwi, apples and pears if you want a lighter, more refreshing flavor.
- Add all the extras! There are many ways to add flavor and other health benefits to the smoothie! Some ideas are: protein powder, natural sweeteners such as stevia or honey, cinnamon, ginger, raw cacao, chia seeds, goji berries… The list is endless and it is only up to you to find the best combination for your taste and goals!
